Filming in Prague
Lights! Camera! Prague!
Welcome to
Prague, capital of the Czech Republic and one of the leading filmmaking cities on the world. Prague has been a filmmaking since the beginning of filmmaking itself. In the early days, major international stars including Hedy Lamarr, worked here. In the 1930s, Barrandov Studios, one of the
largest film studios in Europe, was built in Prague. Even under communism, the city produced such internationally renowned directors as Jiri Menzel and Milos Forman.
It was
Forman who opened a new chapter in Prague film history when he returned to his homeland to film
Amadeus. That film won many international awards and focused the world´s attention on Prague´s stunning beauty and potential as a location for making movies.
After the Velvet Revolution in 1989, Prague was once again fully open for business.
Tom Cruise came to the Czech Republic in 1995 with director Brian De Palma to film the international blockbuster
Mission: Impossible, cementing Prague´s reputaion as a world-class film capital.
Prague has lent the suggestiveness of Cold-War skulduggery to
Mission: Impossible and other cloak-and-dagger thrillers. It was in Prague that Daniel Craig became the new James Bond in Casino Royale. Matt Damon introduced the Jason Bourne trilogy with The Bourne Identity. And Angelina Jolie, Morgan Freeman and James McAvoy kept the action rolling with Wanted.
As anone who´s wandered Prague´s narrow, cobblestone streets at night will tell you, there´s something undeniably spooky about the city. The city´s dark side has made it a sar in many chillers.
Johny Depp pursued Jack The Ripper here in
From Hell. Wesley Snipes battled vampires in
Blade II. And Liev Schreiber and Julia Stiles reared the spawn of Satan in The Omen.
Filmmakers have taken advantage of the city´s diverse architecture and preserved history to use it as a stand-in for London, Paris, Rome, Vienna, Venice, Zurich and even Miami.
You can find the locations of some of your own favorite movie scenes and retrace the steps of the stars - and you can enjoy the same hospitality the city shows its famous guests. See details in following articles!
