Prague Valentine’s Day

 Image
On the first day of May, everybody in Prague is celebrating the lovers day. For a long, long time, this date is known for couples, kissing under the tree in bloom. All over the world, people think that there is only one day in the year for lovers, but the Czech (especially our poet Karel Hynek Macha, who wrote „May“ in the 19th century) are celebrating this day just like all the Americans do on Valentine’s day.

One of the places, where young couples always go on the 1st of May is Petrin Hill, located in Prague. There is an watchtower (with broadcaster) and a lot of parks with lovely little places under the trees. Walking on the Charles Bridge or on the embankment of Vltava could be really nice, but if you are in love and you want to celebrate the „Prague Valentine’s day,“ you really need to visit Petrin.

The Night of Witches in Prague

 Image
How did you spend your Night of Witches(called also Philip-Jacob´s night) this year? Prague was celebrating at many places and in many ways. In a small town in the urban district Prague-East one of the biggest Czech bonfires was made. It was more than 20 metres high, made of woodpile, burning for about 2 hours and could be veiwed from a long distance (in kilometres). In the meadows around the center of Prague, there were open air parties with fires, music bands and hundreds of witches flown from all over Prague.

Kylie Minogue in Prague

 Image
Kylie Minogue, born 28 May 1968 is an Australian Grammy and BRIT award-winning pop singer, songwriter and actress. Before she commenced her career as a pop artist in 1987 she was trying to shine in the soap operas. Signed to a contract by British songwriters and producers Stock, Aitken & Waterman in 1988, she achieved a string of hit records throughout the world. Her popularity began to decline during the early 1990s, leading her to part company from Stock, Aitken & Waterman in 1992. During the mid to late 90s, Minogue distanced herself from her earlier work and attempted to establish herself as a credible and independent performer and songwriter. Her projects were widely publicised, but her albums failed to attract a substantial audience and resulted in the lowest sales of her career to date. She returned to popularity as a pop artist in 2000, and became well-known for her elaborate music videos and expensively mounted stage shows.

12th May 2008, O2 Arena, starts 21:00, the tickets are available in www.ticketpro.cz sales network.

Febiofest

 Image
One of the most popular film festivals in our country has already started (28th March) and now it is travelling across various Czech cities. During only one week (ending 4th April) you were able to see 249 movies, which were divided in various genres and themes (like Latin American Panorama, European Masters Cinema, Cool & Crazy etc.). Every genre had its own cinema, but all the halls were in one multiplex cinema called Village Cinemas at Andel (one of Prague’s most famous streets). There were also two small projections in two separate cinemas, but the main event was hosted by Village Cinemas.

When we talk about Febiofest, we could not forget about the Music Fest. The bands were playing at the garages under the cinema and the atmosphere was really „underground.“ The most shining stars were Hypnotix and Mango Gadzi (France). Sometimes the garages were absolutely full and the air was really bad, but it’s the atmosphere, that keeps you there. Of course if you just wanted to chill out a bit and just have fun, there were plenty of opportunities to spend your money for.Febiofest is one of the best places to meet many interesting peoples, friends and enjoy films with limited projections and hear music, that you wouldn’t normally know about. For more information visit: www.febiofest.cz .

Easter holiday in Prague

 Easter markets
Have you ever experienced the typical Czech Easter like the one we wrote about last week? If not we invite you to spend the most beautiful spring holiday in Prague! We found for you few possibilities how to get to know our Easter traditions and Easter atmosphere and meet our culture right in the centre of our capital. We hope you will like it!

Probably the first thing you came across in various brochures about Easter in Prague are the Easter markets. They take place right in the centre of Prague on the Wenceslas and Old Town Square, so you can connect them with sightseeing. They bring the atmosphere of coming spring in the Czech metropolis every year. You can see a lot of symbols of Czech Easter in the stalls such as painted Easter eggs, baked Easter lambs and cross buns or typical Easter whipper. You can buy them as a souvenir for your friends and relatives or just for memory of your trip to our country. On the Old Town Square, there will be a stage, where you can admire Czech Easter traditions that are nowadays held almost only in small towns and villages.
The Easter markets runs from the 8th to the 30th March 2008.

Czech Easter Holiday

 Easter eggs
Have you ever experienced the typical Czech Easter? And would you like to know how people in the Czech Republic celebrate it? Let’s get to know the typical Czech traditions, customs and symbols connected with this season and cook a typical Czech Easter meal.

Do you know how a typical Czech Easter week looks like?
It starts on so called Ash Wednesday. The name of this day is derived from a very old habit of villagers. In the morning a sweeper came to the house of the farmer and swept all the chimneys. After this, housewives cleaned stoves and fireplaces. They took out all the ash from their house. It is said that people should not frown on this day; otherwise they will frown every next Wednesday in the next year.

Holy Thursday is attended by the voice of bells that ring for the last time before their “fly to Rome”. People make it up for the voice of rattles and clappers. This day is called “Green Thursday” in Czech because people should eat something green – spinach, cress or nettles. You can use vegetable also as an ingredient to some typical Easter meals such as very popular farcing which is eaten together with chicken and potatoes.

Zoo Prague belongs to the world’s best zoos

 Gorilla Moja, Zoo Prague
Zoo Prague ranked among the best 10 zoos in the world according to the prestige American Magazine Forbes that is known for publishing charts of all kind. The largest Czech zoo appeared on the 7th place among such zoos like Animal Kingdom in Orlando, USA, Basel Zoo in Switzerland, Beauval Zoo in France, Berlin Zoo in Germany or Bronx Zoo in New York, USA. Petr Fejk, the director of Zoo Prague, says that the chart means a great surprise and success, because it was created without any lobbing of Prague. The zoo prevailed only thanks to its quality and friendly atmosphere. The main criteria for the chart were conditions for animals as well as for visitors, aesthetics, history and reputation. Zoo Prague is very small with its 111 acres and 4600 animals in contrast to the other zoos, but it can be proud of its animal growth and rare species such as young gorillas, dragon lizards and new gavials. If you would like to variegate your stay in Prague, we highly recommend you to visit it!

The live show takes place on 20th February 2008 in T-Mobile Arena, Prague (HC Sparta, Prague). Nightwish will come in the typical line-up: Annete Olzon – vocals, Tuomas Holopainen – keyboards, Marco Hietala – bass and vocals, Erno “Emppu” Vuorinen – guitar and Jukka Nevalainen – drums. They have prepared a new album “Dark Passion Play” for the tour. Nightwish appeared in 1996, when the first three members (Tuomas Holopainen, Erno Vuorinen and Tarja Turunen) recorded their first acoustic demo song Nightwish. They added metal elements and new members, who have changed during the years. Nightwish recorded several albums. We can name “Angel Fall First”, “Oceanborn”, “Wishmaster”, “Century Child”, “Once” and the last one “Dark Passion Play”.
