New gallery DOX opened in Prague

In Prague Holesovice close to Orten’s square, a new, ambitious centre of art opens, lining up to the two most extensive Czech private Galleries. Its name sounds international : DOX.

Those three thousand cubic metres will be to disposition to Czech and foreign artists according to selection of renowned curators. The first of them was Spanish José Maria Cano, who belonged to the pop idols in Spanish-speaking countries twenty years ago. He moved to London, and his paintings sell for a few tens thousands euro. Now you can see in gallery exhibition of Austrian artist Markus Huemer organized by the Czech not-for-profit institution. The exhibition comprises fifteen medium to large-size paintings and two projections installed in four galleries of the DOX tower building.

Part of the gallery is also the presentation and sale of works of prominent Czech and foreign design studios as well as work of individual artists.

Answers Don’t Fall from the Sky, Either is the title of the first exhibition of Austrian artist Markus Huemer. Huemer employs both traditional and new media – painting on one hand and digital technology (including projection) on the other – but his main distinction is in the way he connects the two. As many contemporary artists still grapple with the issue raised by Walter Benjamin in his classic “The Work of Art in the Age of Mechanical Reproduction” (1936), particularly how photomechanical reproduction changed the status of the work of art, Huemer takes a further step to question the status of painting in the age of electronic images.
